Our region has a diverse representation of entomology to support local trout including the worlds largest mayfly, the Hexagenia.
April/May:
Big Bugs: Green Drakes on Hat Creek and McCloud River. Salmonflies on Hat, Pit, and
McCloud rivers.
Other Hatches: PMDs on Hat Creek, Fall River
June:
Big Bugs: Golden Stones on Pit, Hat and McCloud rivers. Hexogenia Mayflies on Fall River starting
mid-month.
Other Hatches: PMDs on Fall River, Trico Spinners in the morning on Hat Creek, Little
Yellow Stoneflies and Caddisflies in the evenings on Hat, Pit and McCloud rivers.
July:
Big Bugs: Hexogenia Mayflies on the Fall River all month long. Other Hatches: PMD and Callibaetis duns and spinners on Fall River, Trico Spinners in the morning on Hat Creek, Little Yellow Stoneflies and Caddisflies in the evenings on Hat, Pit and McCloud rivers. Callibaetis duns and spinners on Cassel Forebay and Baum Lake.
August:
Big Bugs: A few late Hexogenia Mayflies on the Fall River. Other Hatches: PMD and Callibaetis duns and spinners on Fall River, Trico Spinners in the morning on Hat Creek, Little Yellow Stoneflies and caddisflies in the evenings on Hat, Pit and McCloud. Callibaetis duns and spinners at Cassel Forebay and Baum Lake.
September:
PMD, Callibaetis, mahogany, and baetis duns and spinners on Fall River, Baum Lake, Cassel Forebay and Hat Creek. Trico Spinners in the morning on Hat Creek.
October/November:
Big Bugs: October Caddis on Pit and McCloud rivers. Salmonflies on Burney Creek. Streamer fishing for browns on the McCloud. Other Hatches: PMD, Callibaetis, mahogany, and baetis duns and spinners on Fall River, Baum Lake, Cassel Forebay and Hat Creek. Trico Spinners in the morning on Hat Creek.
